The LL Signature Series Plain or flavoured Mielie Pips
In South African carp fishing, maize—often called mielies, mealies, maize pips or mielie pips—is one of the most established and versatile carp baits available. It can be used as a hook bait, hair-rig bait, feed bait, particle bait, or as part of a feeding mix.
What are maize or mielie pips?
Maize pips are whole kernels of maize used to attract and catch carp. Unlike sweetcorn, which is generally soft and ready to use from the tin, fishing maize is usually a harder, tougher kernel that can be prepared by soaking and cooking.
Once properly prepared, maize becomes softer and more attractive to carp while remaining firm enough to withstand casting, smaller nuisance fish and extended periods in the water.
For South African anglers, maize is particularly useful for both conventional bank angling and specimen carp fishing.
Why do carp eat maize?
Carp are opportunistic feeders and naturally investigate food items they find on the bottom. Prepared maize provides several characteristics that make it an effective carp bait.
Its bright yellow colour provides excellent visual attraction, while the natural carbohydrates and sugars released during preparation provide a food signal. The kernels are also conveniently sized for carp to pick up individually or feed on in quantity.
Another major advantage is that anglers can introduce a relatively large bed of maize without the expense associated with feeding the same quantity of boilies.
That makes maize particularly useful when you want to establish a feeding area and encourage carp to remain in one location.
