Split shot lead weights are small, crimpable weights used to control bait depth, sink rate, and presentation in fishing.

Description

Split shot weights are small spherical or egg-shaped pieces of lead / metal with a partial cut that allows them to be crimped onto a fishing line. They are primarily used to adjust the depth of your bait or float, control the sink rate, and improve presentation for both freshwater and saltwater fishing

By adding or removing split shot, anglers can fine-tune their rig without retying, making them versatile for changing conditions.

Split shot weights come in multiple sizes, often labelled numerically or in weight (e.g., 0.25g, 0.4g, 0.8g etc.), with each size corresponding to a specific weight or size. Smaller sizes are ideal for light fishing, trout, or panfish, while larger sizes are used to sink bait quickly or fish in fast currents

Some specialized types, like Styles (long and thin) or Stotz (shorter and fatter), are designed to fall through water more slowly and stay on the line better.

Usage Tips

  • Crimping: Place the line in the cut and gently crimp the weight closed. Ensure it is secure to prevent sliding.
  • Placement: For slow sinking, spread multiple split shots along the line (“shirt button style”). For fast sinking, bunch them near the hook.
  • Adjusting presentation: Moving weights closer or farther from the hook changes the bait’s action and depth.
